Remove Judge Aaron Persky - have you signed?
Sign the petition to remove Judge Aaron Persky from the bench for his decision in the Brock Turner rape caseWe are sure that you've heard about - and are infuriated by - the recent verdict in the case of a former Stanford swimmer who was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, and who received as a sentence six months in a county jail.
If you haven't already, please take these two actions:
You also may have read the statement from Brock Turner's father, lamenting the impact this case has had on his once "happy go lucky" son, and how unfair it is for Brock to be punished for a mere "20 minutes of action." As Christina Cauterucci put it so well in Slate,Dan Turner manages to sum up rape culture in one brief statement.
Now read this response to Dan Turner, "To Brock Turner's Father, From Another Father," by Jon Pavlovitz. The contrast between the two messages is striking, to say the least.
And also read this from Shaun King: Brock Turner and Cory Batey, two college athletes who raped unconscious women, show how race and privilege affect sentences. "One man will spend the entire prime of his life in prison for his crime — the other will be out of jail before the summer heat disappears. One man is black and the other is white. I won't even ask you to guess which is which. This is America."
On a much more positive note, there was this news yesterday:
